Needle and Hook Gauge - made in UK
This item is currently out of stock whilst I await my very own laser cutter (meep!). Rather than place an order with my existing supplier, I would rather wait until my own machine arrives so that I can control the provenance of the wood used and the final design aspects.
The machine is due in June 2018 and these are one of the first items that will be made with my new machine. It's all very exciting, so do please keep on checking back in.
This fantastic checker makes checking your needle and hook size very easy.
I was inspired to create these after falling foul when using some of the free ones that I had received with magazines. When checking against two different plastic gauges they gave two different needle sizes! So, in a quest for accuracy, I have worked to create a needle and hook gauge that is laser cut into wood and is accurate. When you place a 4mm needle or hook into the 4mm hole, it is snug - as it should be.
These needle and hook gauges have metric sizes on one side US sizes on the other, so no matter what your pattern calls for, you can quickly check that you are using the right sized tool.
In the photos you can see how they are made. To ensure that there is as little wastage as possible the cut out from the large tension square checker makes the small tension square checker and the cut out from that is used to make the needle/hook gauge.
This means that the only wastage from the initial sheet of wood is about a 1.5mm border around the sheet and the holes from the needle/hook guage. Better for the environment and your pocket because as the customer you are only paying for the product, not lots of wastage.
There are other shaped needle gauges on the market. This one has been designed to create as little waste as possible which is why it is a simple square and does what it need to do. It's a great addition to your project bag or craft kit.
Using the Needle and Hook Gauge
It is as easy as it looks. You simply place your needle or hook (please note that you can only check straight bodied crochet hooks because it is the bottom of the shaft that you measure) through the gauge hole.
The following gauge holes are on the Needle and Hook Gauge:
Metric - 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm & 10mm.
US - 0, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10.5, 10.75, 11, 13 & 15.
If you are trying to measure a size that isn't represented on the gauge, a 2.75mm needle for instance then it wouldn't fit into the 2.5mm hole and would be loose in the 3mm hole.
Needle and Hook Gauge dimensions
Approximately 5cm long by 5cm wide and 0.3cm deep.

Product materials, sourcing and PoM Rating
This product was originated by me at KNIT IT - HOOK IT- CRAFT IT. The birch wood used in the tension squares and needle/hook gauges is from Russia and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The sheets of wood are laser cut and engraved by Helen in her workshop in Lancashire before the final items comes back to me, near Sandbach in Cheshire, for bundling and posting out to customers.
The ribbon that is attached to the gauge is also manufactured in Cheshire, England.
Postage and Packaging
The P&P costs applied are very transparent. No additional costs are added on, you simply pay for the cost of packaging and the cost of postage. I don't offer free P&P because what that usually means is that the cost of P&P has been added to the cost of goods. I think it is better to assume that my customers aren't daft and would rather have transparent P&P costs than the pretense of 'Free P&P' with inflated prices on the items that they are buying.
